Visit to the Palace: Monumental Quarters and Bianca Cappello Room

Palazzo Vecchio is a microcosm where history and art have been firmly linked for over seven centuries. Consequently, there are many ways of experiencing this building, as it is a prestigious treasure chest filled with artworks where architecture, the minor arts, sculptures, and paintings all compete in creating a rich and complex whole.

Discover these aspects of Palazzo Vecchio - a true museum in itself - as your expert guides reveal and explain artworks that are universally recognized as masterpieces, such as The Genius of the Victory by Michelangelo Buonarroti; the bronze statues of Judith and Holofernes by Donatello; the Cherub with Dolphin by Verrocchio; the frescoes by Agnolo Bronzino in the Chapel of Eleonora; the Siege of Siena at Porta Camollia by Giorgio Vasari; and the Triumph of Furio Camillo, by Francesco Salviati.

The visit ends in a place that is normally not open to the public – the chamber created specially for the Duchess Bianca Cappello, second wife of Francesco I de' Medici at the end of the 16th century, a tiny, refined study associated with her passion as a collector. A particular curiosity of this room is a small window behind a grate, from where the Duchess could observe the happenings in the Salone dei Cinquecento without being seen. And this is exactly what visitors can now do from this tiny room.
