Genoa and Portofino

Discover the charm of Genoa, historical port city with a glorious past, nowadays one of the most fascinating centers of northern Italy. Often shadowed by other Italian cities, the city offers a multitude of hidden gems, such as the picturesque alleys (caruggi) of the old town. One of the four “Repubbliche Marinare” (Sea Republic, together with Pisa, Venice, and Amalfi), Genoa has a long history as a rich and powerful trade center. Genoa's ancient harbor was recently renovated by famous Italian architect Renzo Piano.

Your day excursion begins with a visit to the historical center of the birthplace of explorer Christopher Columbus, with its terracotta-roofed houses, beautiful churches and seaside villas, a quintessential Italian experience. After your guided tour of the heart of Genoa, you'll have free time to have lunch and explore on your own.

In the afternoon, your excursion will continue with a visit of the lovely fishing town of Santa Margherita Ligure, set on the Gulf of Tigullio between Rapallo and Portofino. Fashionable but much quieter than Portofino, life in Santa Margherita Ligure centers around the lovely harbor with its palm trees, where boating and simple sunning are the order of the day. The town has a 16th century castle and the 17th century Basilica di Santa Margherita.

You'll then take a boat to Portofino, a half-moon shaped sea side village whose beauty has been narrated across the millennia by writers and poets such as Dante, Lordy Byron, and Guy de Maupassant. Boutiques, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants line the tiny streets and await your visit. The Church of St. Martin (Divo Martino) and the Castello Brown hilltop fortress are some of the main sights – but its greatest asset is the beautiful bay it graces. You'll have free time to explore on your own, after which a boat will take you back to Santa Maria Ligure where your bus to Milan will be waiting for you.
