Itinerary 1: Pontormo and Palazzo Pitti:
The painter Jacopo Carucci was born in Pontormo near Empoli in 1494. As an orphaned boy, he was shuttled around the ateliers of the great - among them Andrea del Sarto and Leonardo da Vinci - as apprentice. Later he painted under the auspices of the Medici patronage, which is why many of his haunting works are still in Florence. Discover the connection between stinginess and luxury at the Florentine court as you take this journey into the paradoxical worlds of art and food in 16th century Florence.
Itinerary 2: The Last Suppers (Cenacoli):
From refectories to museums, Florence is rich with Last Supper representations. This central scene of the life of Jesus offers a fascinating point of departure for exploring the connections between art, food, and religion in the great Renaissance frescoes. Lead by your knowledgeable guide you’ll discover symbols and daily life in the tables laid for the Last Supper.
Itinerary 3: Brunelleschi and the Duomo:
Filippo Brunelleschi was one of the foremost architects and engineers of the Italian Renaissance. He is perhaps most famous for the engineering feat he accomplished in building the cupola of the Duomo in Florence. But beside being an architect and engineer, he was also an artist, a sculptor - and he may even have been a chef...
