Rome with Children - A Full Day Guided Tour

Your family day in Rome starts at the Colosseum, where gladiators fought with lions! A gladiator can usually be found at the entrance, your kids will love to take a photo with him. The Colosseum ruins are perfectly preserved, which makes it easier to imagine the exciting times it has seen. The children will be fascinated by the tunnels below, where the animals and gladiators waited to enter the arena.

Your next stop will be the Trevi Fountain, where all will enjoy joining the tradition by throwing a coin in the water, which is said to guarantee a return to Rome. Enjoy discovering the many allegorical figures creating this sumptuous fountain dedicated to the theme of The Taming of the Waters.

For brave and adventurous children (and adults!), a stop at the crypt of the Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini will be exciting. It contains the remains of 4,000 friars – and the walls are decorated with individual skulls and bones, a macabre work of art. During the visit, your offspring might cling to your skirts, but once back home they will impress their friends with how fearless they were. Please note – it is up to you to decide whether to include the intense experience of this visit in your tour.

Not far from the Trevi fountain is a special attraction for children and the young-at-heart – the Time Elevator. This is a multi-sensorial, four-dimensional experience that describes 3,000 years of Roman history, from Romulus and Remus to the present, in an entertaining and educational format, including special effects, such as moving seats. The entire presentation lasts 45 minutes.

Next we will visit Saint Ignatius of Loyola, a beautiful Baroque church. The ceiling holds an optical illusion to astonish the whole family, created by a master of perspective, Andrea Pozzo.

Now follow your guide to the nearby Pantheon, the best preserved Roman temple. The Pantheon has the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome – over 1,000 years after having been built. This is actually a moment to wish for a bit of rain - as it is exciting to see it coming through the big hole in the center of the dome and fall into the temple!

Time to cross the Tiber – you'll reach it by walking through Piazza Navona. Castle Sant'Angelo, a medieval fortress built over the first century mausoleum of Hadrian greets you from across the river. The popes took refuge in this fortress during the time of the Barbarian invasions of Rome. Here, the allure of the Middle Ages is preserved in a setting that is both beautiful and fascinating.

A short walk then takes you into the Vatican and to Saint Peter's Square (designed by Bernini, genius of the Baroque), where you'll enjoy the end of the day at a magical location, which is the entrance to the magnificent Saint Peter's Basilica.
