The Castello di Spessa is a historic residence (13th century) in the heart of Collio Goriziano in Friuli Venezia Giulia, one of the most famous Italian wine regions. Built in 1200, the Castle of Spessa was for centuries the home of the Friulian nobility and summer residence for famous personalities such as Giacomo Casanova and Lorenzo Da Ponte.

The wine aging cellars of Castello di Spessa, the oldest in the Collio Goriziano region, are dug right under the castle and are on two levels: the first and oldest dates back to medieval times. The second level is almost 60 feet below ground level, with 70 steps leading down into it. Built in 1939 by the Italian army, it used to be a military bunker and was used by both Germans and Americans as an outpost until the end of the war. The wines of the Castle have been famous since the second half of the fourteenth century. Casanova, who spent long periods here, defined the quality of the Castle wines as "excellent" in his memoirs.

The tours begin with a video projection of about 10 minutes in which the resort and the wines are presented.
