Mille Miglia Car Race Museum

Opened on November 10, 2004, this special museum situated inside the Monastery of Saint Eufemia (a beautiful building complex of immense archaeological, historical, and architectural value) is dedicated to exploring and illuminating the Mille Miglia (“Thousand Miles”), Brescia’s legendary car race.

The historical route of the open road endurance race takes drivers from Brescia (near the Alps) over Padova, Ravenna, Loreto, L'Aquila to Rome and back again through Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Bologna to Brescia. The race was banned after 1957 after two fatal crashes. Since 1977, the race has been staged as the Mille Miglia Storica, a parade for pre-1957 cars that takes several days.

The idea of a museum dedicated to the “Red Arrow” (the Mille Miglia's symbol and logo) was launched and implemented by the Associazione Museo della Mille Miglia Città di Brescia, together with the Automobile Club of Brescia.

The museum is indeed unusual, as it is dedicated not only to the Mille Miglia car race, but also to placing the extraordinary sporting event into a historical and cultural context, illustrating a cross section of Italian culture, history, and social customs through the monuments and places, towns and regions included in the route of this epoch-making event between 1927 to 1957.

The museum consists of nine “time sections” (seven of them are devoted to the 1927-1957 Mille Miglia, one of them to the 1958-1961 Mille Miglia, and one to the contemporary Mille Miglia). Each section is provided with a computer station offering information, race results, and images, as well as a few screens where you’ll be able to view original filmed sequences.

During your museum visit, you'll see private collector cars up close. These cars are periodically replaced in case of participation in event, with the largest turnover usually taking place on the occasion of the Mille Miglia Storica (middle of May).

Your self-guided, experiential museum visit (clearly marked by a red walkway meandering across all the sections of the museum) will take you along the entire physical and historical route of the Mille Miglia across Italy, passing through regions, cities, and crowds of people. And of course, you'll see images of the participants in the event – the cars and drivers.

Your visit ends with a look at the rare collection of cars and car-related items dedicated to the historical Mille Miglia competition, located in the medieval stables of the Monastery.
