Combo Ticket Palazzo Te + Palazzo San Sebastiano in Mantua

PALAZZO TE
Palazzo Te was built between 1525 and 1535 by Giulio Romano, commissioned by Federico II Gonzaga.

The famous residence, created for feasts and entertainment of Mantua's Duke, was built on an island just next to the city center. The island was known as “Tejeto” or “Te” since the Middle Ages. The origin of the name is thought to come from “tiletum” (place with linden trees), or the celtic “tezza” combined with the Latin “attegia,” both of which translate to “hut.”

The palace spaces – the Room of the Horses, the Room of Psyche, the Room of the Giants (with Giulio Romano's illusionist fresco of the Fall of the Giants – Mannerism's most famous fresco)- the loggias and the Apartment of the Secret Garden, together with the Courtyard of Honor and the Exedra Garden represent the highest expression of the genius of Giulio Romano, great architect and painter.

The Palace is seat of the Civic Museum. The rooms of the upper floor host the permanent collection: the collection gifted by the editor Mondadori, including paintings by Spadini and Zandomeneghi; the permanent Gonzaga collections of coins, medals, weights and measures from the 14th to the 18th centuries; Giuseppe Acerbi's Egyptian Collection, composed of 500 pieces, and the collection of Ugo Sissa, a Mantua architect and artist who collected numerous pieces of Mesopotamian art in Baghdad.

PALAZZO SAN SEBASTIANO
Also built upon commission of Francesco II Gonzaga, Palazzo San Sebastiano was created to house the impressive paintings of the Triumph of Caesar by Andrea Mantegna, and to become the prince's private leisure residence.

Situated in the southern part of the city near the island of the Te, with horse stables built some time before, the palace of San Sebastiano stands out through the large north-facing loggia, which would form the backdrop for theater events especially during the period of the carnival.

Beyond the paved courtyard, large expanses of rich gardens with boxwood labyrinths and citrus trees spread to the House of Mantegna.

A restoration campaign started in 1995 brought the palace back to the original splendor, including the Renaissance decorations, restoring its architectural value and making it the ideal seat for the Museum of the City of Mantua.

The Museum of the City presents an important core of works belonging to the Civic Collections forming the Homeland Museum during the 19th century, telling the most important moments of Mantua story and exhibiting some aspects of its artistic heritage.

The Museum also hosts the Center of Studies and Documentation on the Civic Collections, allowing the public to access all the findings about the collections in this museum and other museums of the city.

Once a confirmation code has been assigned to the reservation we can refund the cost of unused tickets minus a service fee (reservation fee and online booking fee) up to 3 business days before the visit.
