Ancient Rome: Food and Wine in Daily Life - Roman Forum, Palatine, Colosseum | Weekend in Italy
With this guided tour, you’ll discover the alimentary habits and the symbolic role of food and wine in Ancient Rome. Your guided tour takes you to the most important sites in Ancient Rome - the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill, and the Colosseum.
Originally a market, the Roman Forum was the center for public life in Ancient Rome. Over the course of time, it developed into an area that also included the main public buildings and temples. In its role as public space, it was also an important location for banquets and public food distribution.
Your tour then continues where the emperors lived, on the Palatine Hill. It is the best place to discuss Apicius, the famous Roman gourmet and lover of refined luxury from the 1st century.
Your tour culminates with a visit of the Colosseum, the most famous arena of Antiquity. You’ll learn about the special diet of the gladiators and about the street food traditionally enjoyed by the Roman spectators during the games.
A wine tasting completes the experience. Spend an hour at a nearby wine bar, at a distance of 15 minutes on foot. Here you will taste some wines accompanied by small appetizers, while your guide gives you an overview of Italian and Lazio wines, detailing the history and characteristics of the different varieties.
