The Baptistery of San Giovanni of the Cathedral of Florence is an extraordinary masterpiece of architecture and one of the oldest buildings in the city, built between 1059 and 1128. Its decoration required the work of generations of artists, reflecting the main events taking place in the city. The octagonal building clad in white and green marble is filled with sculptural groups, and Byzantine and medieval mosaics. The Baptistery is particularly famous for the large bronze doors, in the Gothic style of Andrea Pisano and the versatile and fine genius of Lorenzo Ghiberti, who created the “Doors of Paradise”.
