Reopened after long lasting restoration works at the end of October 2015, the Museo dell'Opera opens a window on the history of the Fabric of the Cathedral and the architectural complex of the Duomo, a seven centuries long history.

  • Entrance ticket also allows the visit, without guide, to Giotto's Bell Tower and Brunelleschi's Dome, within 24 hours from ticket issue.

The monumental complex of Santa Maria del Fiore is above all a place of worship. Visitors are asked to respect some simple rules. Your pre-purchased ticket DOES NOT guarantee access or the possibility to stay inside the monument. You may be asked to leave if you choose not to respect the following:

  • Appropriate clothing is required – no bare arms/shoulders or bare legs. Special attention to this point; access to the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Crypt will be denied without an appropriate attire
  • Please respect the silence
  • Please turn your mobile phones and other electronic devices off
  • Do not eat nor drink
  • Pets are not allowed
  • Works of art must not be touched
  • No smoking
  • No flash photography or tripod
  • Entrance not allowed with large suitcases
  • Wardrobe not present

Initiated in 1296 by order of the Republic of Florence under the influence of Arnolfo di Cambio, construction of the cathedral was a huge undertaking of great importance, attracting the creative contributions of many of the greatest geniuses of the city - Donatello, Ghiberti, Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, Luca della Robbia, Andrea Pisano, Nanni di Banco, and many more of perhaps lesser fame, but no less importance in the fabric of the artistic legacy of Florence.
