Learn to row like a gondoliere (or at least learn the basic technique of Venetian style rowing)! Together with an expert English speaking rower you'll go in the south lagoon where your maestrowill teach you the basics (and some tricks) of unique Venetian style rowing. Your two hour lesson takes place in one of the world’s most unusual landscapes - the lagoon of Venice. Beyond learning to row, you'll learn about the history and traditions of Venice and its islands. Knowing and loving the city’s traditions is a way to keep Venice alive - and rowing (“vogare” in Venetian) is one of the most important aspects of the folklore.
For this activity the boat you'll use is the "Sampierotta Mora” a safe and steady (and amazing) training boat. The Sampierotta, for centuries the traditional fishing boat of the southern lagoon of Venice, takes its name from the fishing village of San Pietro in Volta on the lagoon island of Pellestrina. It is a very adaptable boat that can be propelled by motor, rowing, or sailing. Thanks to the flat bottom (fishing in only 25 cm / less than 4 inches deep waters), the Sampierotta can navigate even in very shallow waters leaving the canals to venture into the most striking and less trafficked areas. Our Sampierotta"Mora" was built in 1981 at the shipyard "Menetto" of San Pietro in Volta. The yard "Menetto" was known for the unmistakable design they gave to their sampierottas. Despite the age, it's a beautiful and very elegant boat; it can carry up to 5 people plus the driver and it is equipped with two benches with cushions.
