Basilica di Santo Spirito e Fondazione Salvatore Romano

Santo Spirito remains one of the most captivating masterpieces of Florentine architecture

Info & Booking

After designing the iconic dome of Florence’s Duomo, Brunelleschi was entrusted with the project for the Augustinian church of Santo Spirito, begun in 1444. Following his death, however, his original design—filled with daring and innovative architectural solutions—underwent numerous changes, sparking lively debate. Yet Santo Spirito remains one of the most captivating masterpieces of Florentine architecture. Adjacent to the church, the octagonal Sacristy, completed at the end of the 15th century by Giuliano da Sangallo, houses a remarkable wooden Crucifix attributed to a young Michelangelo.

The visit continues in the former refectory, now home to the Salvatore Romano Collection. Here, visitors can admire exquisite sculptures and architectural fragments generously donated to the city by the antiquarian in 1946. The collection spans from late antiquity to the 16th century, offering a refined glimpse into centuries of artistic and cultural heritage.
