Introduction to Naples, The wonders of local cuisine, Archaeological Museum, Sansevero Chapel, Cathedral, Certosa San Martino, Church of Monteoliveto (Sant'Anna dei Lombardi), Church of Pio Monte della Misericordia, Galleria Umberto I, Maschio Angioino Castle, Capodimonte Museum, Piazza Plebiscito, Royal Palace of Caserta, Santa Chiara, Spaccanapoli, Underground Naples, Via Toledo. Founded almost four thousand years ago, Naples was already a large city when it became a Greek colony, and throughout history it was the capital for almost five centuries of a kingdom that came to encompass the whole of southern Italy. Its historic center is the largest in Europe, and walking along Spaccanapoli—the street that divides it in two—you are immersed in a succession of monuments, medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque palaces, along with many of the city's famous 500 churches, each with its own unique history and character. The appearance of modern Naples, a metropolis with over a million inhabitants, is the result of two major reconstructions. The first followed the severe cholera epidemic of 1884: to clean up the city, numerous buildings, including some of great value, were demolished and replaced with bourgeois palaces in the Umbertine style, named after King Umberto I. The major thoroughfares of Via Duomo and Rettifilo date back to this period.
The second reconstruction took place after 1945, when Naples, heavily bombed during World War II because of its strategic port, had to be rebuilt almost from scratch.

Naples' fame derives not only from its natural beauty or the spectacular gulf it overlooks, but above all from its inhabitants, who over the centuries have made it one of the major cultural centers of Europe. Ruled by Germans, Spaniards, and Austrians, the Neapolitans have been able to absorb and transform every influence into art, philosophy, and entertainment. While the city's nobility was among the most refined on the continent, the people also left their mark: Neapolitan cuisine, theater, and music have conquered the world. The spirit of the city—a unique mix of popular traditions, from the cult of Pulcinella to that of Maradona—can be felt in the alleys, markets, restaurants, and thousands of pizzerias.

An interesting fact: Naples is also a land of superstition and magic. The Smorfia Napoletana, an ancient system for interpreting dreams and deriving numbers to play in the lottery, is famous. Get ready to discover the wonders of this extraordinary city.
