Pompeii and Herculanum from Naples

Take a day to tour some of the most exciting sites in Italy! Your tour takes you to the archaeological treasures of Pompeii and Herculaneum below the volcano Vesuvius, and includes a traditional lunch by the seaside, in Torre del Greco on the Gulf of Naples.

Your tour departs from the tourist pier at the port of Naples.

Your first stop will be for a guided visit of the ruins of Pompeii the ancient Roman city that was frozen in time by the eruption of the Vesuvius in 79 AD. In the course of just a few hours, a rain of ash and fragments of lava (lapillus) buried the rich city pulsating with life 25m/82' deep – houses, people, roads, public buildings, and objects of everyday life were encased, locked forever in a terrible instant. With an area of about 66 hectares/163 acres, Pompeii represents a unique heritage of architecture, sculpture, paintings, and mosaics. The ash that buried the city after the eruption allowed for exceptional preservation, giving visitors today the unique opportunity to experience the Roman city in its magnificent wholeness.

It will then be time to take a break and enjoy a delicious lunch at La Casa Rossa 1888 in the small town of Torre del Greco by the sea.

In the afternoon, enjoy your guided tour of the latest excavations of the archaeological site of Herculaneum. Buried by the same Vesuvius eruption that meant the end of Pompeii, Herculaneum is famous for being much better preserved.

At the end of your visit, your driver will take you back to the tourist pier in Naples, ready for a 5:30pm boarding.
