Fratelli Napoli Sicilian Puppet Theater

The Vecchia Dogana, the ancient customs building in the port of Catania, is today a multifunctional center offering a range of commercial and cultural variety – such as the Puppet Theater of Fratelli Napoli. The Fratelli Napoli have been dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the disappearing art of the Opera dei Pupi since 1921.

The "pupi" are icons of Sicilian folk tradition. Declared part of the "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by the UNESCO in 2001, the Opera dei Pupi tradition has two major branches – the Palermo tradition, and the Catania tradition. The marionette company of Fratelli Napoli has adapted the Catanese tradition of the Opera to the taste of the contemporary audience. The company's preservation efforts and performance excellence have earned them the 1978 “Praemium Erasmianum,” a prize awarded by the Dutch royal family.
