Guided by the Museum Egyptologist. With this tour for the whole family, discover how land cultivation, tasks of hunting, fishing and breeding ensured daily survival for the Egyptians already in ancient times. The needs of the living are reflected symbolically even after death, by the souls of the deceased and by the gods. Through work tools, everyday objects, and extraordinarily preserved foods, or their depiction on the findings or on the walls of tombs, you will discover interesting aspects of the food culture of the ancient Egyptians!

Cancellation Policy

The video guide is reserved for individual visitors, it cannot be used by school groups and children under the age of 5.

The observation of work tools, everyday objects and extraordinarily preserved foods, or their depiction on the ancient objects or on the walls of tombs, reveals fascinating aspects of the food culture of the ancient Egyptians.

Itinerary of the visit

Focusing on a selection of display cases distributed throughout the exhibition areas, the guided tour offers a deep and captivating insight into Egyptian life. Learn about the activities of hunting and agriculture from the 4th millennium BC, before Egypt became a unified and organized state during the pharaonic period. The grave offerings and wall paintings in the tombs recall farming and food preparation. The state of preservation of foods and spices deposited in private tombs is by now well-known - you’ll be able to examine it yourself, as it is evidenced by the grave goods of the architect Kha and his wife Merit who lived around 1400 BC! The visit continues with the food taboos and the importance of a varied diet for daily survival. Last stop is the impressive Gallery of the Kings, the ideal setting to talk about the uses of food at court and the rich offerings reserved for the gods.
