The Fairytale of the Turtle and the Sail

Many coats of arms of different historical periods figure in the rich decoration of Palazzo Vecchio, on the facade and in the rooms. But, in the paintings, on the ceilings and on the floors, there can also be seen the mottoes of Cosimo I and other members of the Medici family. Cosimo cared particularly for one of his mottoes, the one with the turtle and the sail and the latin saying “festina lente”, scattered all over the palace. It is a turtle that tells this new story about the palace, even if the story begins in the Mugello landscape, between the Medici villas of Trebbio and Cafaggiolo.

"…Thank you for rescuing me from the road, I got lost, and I wouldn’t have survived, even if protected by my shell. The wheels of the fast running cars would certainly have crushed me. I am very grateful, and to thank you I will tell you my greatgranmother- s favorite story. The story of the turtle and the sail, a friend of the Duke Cosimo I of the Madici family. Listen to me carefully, because it is a nice story about going fast and slow, about being firm and being wise, about a boy who will become a Duke and about a turtle that will be painted a thousand times in the most important palace of Florence… "

After listening to the story, the children will be involved in a “turale chase” throughout the many rooms of Cosimo’s residence.
