Pompeii is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. Wolfgang Goethe, in his diary of his famous trip to Italy in 1787, began his account of his visit to Pompeii as follows: “Many misfortunes have befallen the world, but few have brought as much joy to posterity.” In his day, thanks to the initiative of the Bourbons, excavations of the cities buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD had already been going on for about thirty years. Until then, for almost seventeen centuries, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other towns affected by the disaster had remained hidden under a layer of ten meters of lapilli and solidified mud.

The gradual unearthing of these cities has brought to light a huge number of finds, and excavations continue to this day. Thus, the daily life of the wealthy Roman towns of the 1st century AD has reappeared in every detail: a complete picture of their gestures, habits, and environments. Since then, Pompeii has become a point of reference. Whenever a city abandoned or forgotten due to natural or human causes emerges, it is immediately compared to the ‘real’ Pompeii at the foot of Vesuvius. We know what happened on August 24, 79 AD thanks to two letters from Pliny the Younger, who described the eruption in great detail. Remember that Vesuvius is still an active volcano today, although there have been no major eruptions since 1944. The peak, which the Neapolitans simply call “the mountain,” reaches 1,281 meters and uniquely characterizes the landscape of the Gulf of Naples.
