Guided Tour: The Roman Houses on the Caelian Hill

Follow your knowledgeable guide and discover one of the best conserved Roman era residential building complexes!

Overview

The complex of Roman houses on the Caelian hill is formed by the remains of ancient Roman residences - about 20 rooms, 13 of which frescoed - located under the Basilica of San Giovanni e Paolo al Celio. The remains, discovered in the late 19th century, have become a major evidence of stratification over periods and uses: initially various popular "insulae", later encompassed in a single property, a domus, with frescoed environments, and finally used as the basis for the founding of the upper basilica.
