Synagogue and Jewish museum of Florence

Visit the Great Synagogue of Florence - elaborate Sephardic style with Moorish patterns meets Italian architectural tradition, uniting into a stunning whole.

The Great Synagogue of Florence is one of Europe’s most important examples of the exotic Moorish style.

Info & Booking

The Great Synagogue of Florence was inaugurated in 1882, a few years after the Italian Jews gained Emancipation in 1861 with the proclamation of Italian Unification. The building is one of Europe’s most important examples of the exotic Moorish style. Its appearance - quite different from traditional Florentine architecture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance - and the large cupola covered in green copper (originally gilded) stand out in the city skyline, making this monument visible from every panoramic view point. The Jewish Museum hosts a rich collection of ceremonial Jewish art objects originating from the historic synagogues of the old Florentine Jewish ghetto, as well as photographic and archival documentation of the history of the Jewish community in Florence and Jewish tradition in general. A section dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust completes this interesting museum.

Synagogue and Museum

The Great Synagogue of Florence was inaugurated in 1882, a few years after the Italian Jews gained Emancipation in 1861 with the proclamation of Italian Unification. The building is one of Europe’s most important examples of the exotic Moorish style. Its appearance - quite different from traditional Florentine architecture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance - and the large cupola covered in green copper (originally gilded) stand out in the city skyline, making this monument visible from every panoramic view point. The interior is especially atmospheric for the richness of the geometric decorations in the wall frescoes, the soft light filtering through the stained-glass windows and the splendid mosaics.

An integral part of a visit to the synagogue is the Museo Ebraico (Jewish Museum), founded in 1981 and expanded in 2007. Set up on two floors inside the building, it hosts a rich collection of ceremonial Jewish art objects, silver items and fabrics originating from the historic synagogues of the old Florentine Jewish ghetto and photographic and archival documentation of the history of the Jewish community in Florence.

The third floor displays objects and furnishings connected to the most important moments in Jewish life, family ritual and religious festivals. One room is dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust and equipped for screenings.

A computer area connected to the world's major Jewish museums and centers is set up for public use.

Visits to the complex (not included in ticket price) are led by guides who share their deep knowledge with visitors to facilitate understanding the Jewish heritage in its many facets.

The visit is complemented by a museum bookshop and a large garden, perfect for a restful break.
