Meet the Barberini family - certainly one of the most powerful and famous families in Rome during the 17th century. Originally from Tuscany, where they built their wealth by trading fabrics, the Barberini moved to Rome and began a rapid social ascent, and commissioned some of the major artists of the time - Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Francesco Borromini and Pietro da Cortona - for the construction of palaces, churches, and fountains that changed the face of the city in a way that still exemplifies much of what the world thinks of when thinking “Rome.”
