Guided Tour Wonders of Rome

Experience the best of Rome on this 2 hours and 30 minutes walking tour starting at Piazza della Minerva.

Your tour starts with a short introduction to the topography of the area and the origin of the name. You’ll hear about the Dominican insula, the inquisition and the trial of Galileo, Bernini's small elephant and the flooding of the Tiber. Your tour continues on to the Pantheon where your guide will introduce you to the Pantheon, its history and facade, as well as the fountain on the piazza in front of it. You’ll visit the inside of the Pantheon, the best preserved Roman monument with the biggest brick dome in the history of architecture.

Your tour continues to Piazza Navona with a short stop in front of Palazzo Madama, seat of the Senate of the Republic.

Walking to Piazza Navona is a walk through the history, art and the many unusual "Roman mysteries" from ancient Rome to the present day. Learn about the history of the transformation of this urban space from the Stadium of Domitian to becoming the illustrious example of a "baroque theater." Learn the details about the martyrdom of St. Agnes, the figure of Donna Olimpia Maidalchini, where the figures on the fountains point to, and the interventions of Bernini and Borromini. Your guide will introduce you to it all.  Proceeding towards the southern side of the Piazza Navona, your guide will also discuss the Church of Sant’ Agnese in Agone, Palazzo Pamphilj and the Fontana del Moro. And you’ll hear about some of the many famous films that have had the square as a backdrop, "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" (starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni), "The Talented Mr. Ripley," "Angels & Demons" and most recently "The Great Beauty" (2013).

Your tour leaves the square through Piazza San Pantaleo to reach Campo dei Fiori after crossing Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

Hear about ancient and modern urban planning of Campo dei Fiori, about Giordano Bruno and the historic market. Leave Campo dei Fiori to Piazza del Biscione through the namesake passetto reaching Via di Grotta Pinta.

Your guide will show you how the curvilinear shape of houses still faithfully reproduces the curve of the cavea of the Theater of Pompeius. You’ll then continue to Via dei Chiavari, Via dei Chiodaroli, Via di S. Anna - retracing the route of the great portico behind the stage of the Teatro di Pompeo, up to Largo di Torre Argentina.

Here, you’ll be overlooking the archaeological area to locate the Curia Pompeia - the place where Julius Caesar was stabbed - whose structures are still visible behind the four Republican Temples. Hear about the Tower of Papitto, the “Jewish" antipope Anacletus II and Teatro Argentina, the most famous of Rome, as well as about the no longer existing district of the calcarari and the way in which for many centuries building materials were obtained by "recycling" the monumental remains of Imperial Rome.

Through the Via delle Botteghe Oscure you’ll reach the Museum of Crypta Balbi, which your guide will introduce to you as well as the topography of the area. You’ll then visit the Exedra, which is generally accessible only on weekends, to discover the continuity of life from ancient times through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance up to the Modern age. After the visit of the Exedra, you’ll have the opportunity to reserve access to the underground of the Crypta Balbi at the ticket counter of the museum.
