The Tuscan Cigar Factory & Lucca

Manufacturing the Tuscan Cigar

Florence, 1818: Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, founded a tobacco factory that produces cigars with fermented tobacco. One day, a rainshower accidentally soaked the tobacco, which was put to dry.  In order not to waste it, it  was used to produce low cost cigars. These low cost cigars soon encountered the favor of smokers beyond the borders of the Grand Duchy. This “accidental” cigar became so popular that, by the middle of the 19th century, Naples began producing a similar cigar, the "Strong Fermented", or "Neapolitan," as it was called thereafter.

Your tour starts with the ancient machinery and the intense aromas ranging from leather to wood for smoking. The processing of the tobacco leaves is long and unique as they are taken from large boxes and placed into the fermenting bath. Learn about the steps and different machines that lie between the tobacco leaf and the famous cigar. Your visit includes getting to know the manufacturing work at the heart of the factory - where the women called “sigaraie” hand-roll the cigars.

Visit the quaint old town of Lucca

Your visit to Lucca begins with a walk on the walls of Lucca, built during the 16th century and transformed into urban park spaces during the 19th century. The walls enclose the old city and are its true symbol.  Visible from the walls is the famous Guinigi tower.  Built by the Guinigi, a leading family of rich merchants, it stands out above the roofs with its green hat of trees. You’ll also see the medieval Tower of the Hours, which was built by order of the city council. In addition, you’ll see the Cathedral and the "One Hundred Churches,” take a beautiful walk through Via Fillungo, and much more!
