Ettore Guatelli Museum

The history of everyday life in 20th century Italy comes alive at the Ettore Guatelli Museum. The story is told through 60,000 items cleverly displayed along the walls and ceilings of the spaces of everyday life, the result of sixty years of collecting and continuous rearranging of a primary school teacher in the province of Parma – Ettore Guatelli.

Ettore was born in Guatelli Ozzano Taro in the province of Parma, in 1921. Eldest son of farmers, the frailty of his body due to bone tuberculosis detected at an early age kept him from work in the fields.

During the war years, Ettore met Attilio Bertolucci, the Italian poet and writer, and father of film directors Bernardo and Giuseppe Bertolucci. A strong and lasting friendship grew between the two men, and Attilio became a figure of fundamental importance to Ettore. In 1945, he qualified as a primary school teacher, a title which gave him the opportunity to substitute teach at various schools in the province of Parma.

During the 1940s and 1950s, driven also by the desire to help support the family, Ettore Guatelli manifested a keen interest in the objects of material culture. Through indefatigable research aimed at the collection of those objects too "obvious" to be considered important, Ettore Guatelli accumulated such a quantity of objects to soon qualify it as a “museum collection,” arousing also the interest of many intellectuals, writers, and scholars.

Ettore Guatelli's continuous documentation of the material world bears witnesses to the stories of working men and women, together with a completely original and aesthetically pleasing display, creating a visual monument to everyday life and work, inviting the visitor to reflect on the potential of a collecting seemingly "obvious" objects.
