Itinerary

Piazza del Campidoglio

The Piazza del Campidoglio is a splendid square conceived by Michelangelo for Pope Paul III Farnese, with construction undertaken by various artists up to 1651 when the Palazzo Nuovo was built.

You will reach the square via the grand flight of steps known as the "Cordonata", especially designed by Michelangelo for the triumphal entry of the Emperor Charles V in 1536. Michelangelo placed the equestrian statue of Marc Aurel on a new pedestal. The statue was removed in 1981 for some delicate restoration work and is now situated on the ground floor of the Museo Capitolino.

The Forum Romanum

The Forum (a Latin word meaning open space or market place) was the administrative and corporate heart of Rome. Generally this word referred to the open space in any Roman town where business, judicial, civic, or religious activities were conducted. A typical forum might be surrounded by temples, shops, and basilicas (large, covered structures used for various meetings).

The Roman Forum was designed by the architect Vitruvius. For centuries, the Roman Forum was the site of the city's most important public buildings including the Arch of Septimius Severus, built in 203 BC and the Rostra or public speaking platforms.

The Colosseum

The Colosseum is the uncontested symbol of the greatness of Rome and stage of the historical fightings of gladiators. The original name for the Colosseo is the Anfiteatrum Flavium. It was built by emperor Vespasian and inaugurated in 80 AD.

In the ancient world, the elliptical-shaped Colosseum was the largest structure of its type. It took 10 years to build it, and the structure stands 160 feet high with four stories of windows, arches, and columns. Each of the three exterior floors consists of 80 arches. As many as 50,000 spectators with numbered tickets entered through 76 entrances on the ground level.

Constantine's Arch

Constantine's Arch was built in 315 AD to commemorate his victory in the battle of Pons Milvius in 312. As the new Roman Emperor, Constantine ended all persecution of Christians. He also moved the capital from Rome to Constantinople, in modern-day Turkey, and thus the Byzantine Empire began.
